Description:

This Original German Army (Heer) Panzer Assault Badge, In Bronze features a vertically oval, embossed oak-leaf wreath with intricate detailing, encircling a forward-facing tank profile. At the top center of the wreath, a Wehrmacht-style eagle with down-swept wings is prominently superimposed. The craftsmanship highlights fine details across the wreath, eagle, and tank design. The reverse side is solid, retaining much of its original silver wash finish. It includes a ball hinge mechanism with a thin, round vertical pin and catch affixed to a ball-shaped base plate. The badge is marked with the maker’s trademark, attributed to Adolf Scholze.

Adolf Scholze Maker Mark. 1.75 X 2.5 inches. This Badge is in Mint Condition.

History:

The Panzer Badge was introduced on December 20, 1939, to honor the achievements of Panzer personnel involved in armored assaults. Designed by the Berlin-based firm Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus, it was established by the directive of Generaloberst Walther von Brauchitsch. On June 6, 1940, a Bronze class of the badge was introduced to recognize crews operating armored vehicles other than tanks.

Recipients received a standard award document detailing their rank, name, and the authorizing officer's signature. The badge was worn on the left pocket of the tunic. The Bronze version specifically acknowledged armored personnel and Panzer grenadier units using armored vehicles. It was also awarded to members of armored reconnaissance groups and rifle battalions within Panzer divisions. Authorization for these badges was typically handled at the regimental or divisional level.
