History
The original World War II German folding shovel, often referred to as the "Entrenching Tool" or "Trench Shovel," was a standard-issue tool used by German soldiers during the war. This tool was a versatile piece of equipment that could be used for digging trenches, foxholes, and defensive positions, as well as for various other tasks like clearing debris, building obstacles, and even as a makeshift weapon.
The design of the German folding shovel was relatively simple. It consisted of a metal blade attached to a wooden or metal handle that could be folded for compact storage and transportation. The blade was typically rectangular in shape, with a sharpened edge on one side for digging and cutting. The handle could be folded at a 90-degree angle, allowing the shovel to be used for digging or scraping, and then folded back for easier carrying.
These shovels were often carried in a special carrying pouch or cover made of canvas or leather. The cover was designed to protect the blade and keep it securely fastened to the soldier's equipment when not in use.
The German folding shovel was widely used by various branches of the German military during World War II, including the Army (Heer), Air Force (Luftwaffe), and Waffen-SS. It was considered an essential tool for soldiers on the battlefield and in various combat situations.
