The interior is compartmentalized to hold maps, writing utensils, and small field tools, reflecting its intended battlefield functionality. The leather flap is secured with the original strap and buckle system, both intact and fully operational. Stamped on the reverse is a clear 1939 date, along with the manufacturer’s mark: Gebr. Wald, Hachenburg, confirming it was produced in Germany at the onset of the war. This marking adds historical value and authenticity to the piece. Overall, this is a fine, well-preserved example of a German M1939 Mapcase, perfect for collectors of WWII field gear, reenactors, or historical displays.

History

The WW2 German Wehrmacht leather map case served as official military equipment which German officers and NCOs used to transport maps and documents and small tools throughout World War II. The Wehrmacht map case consists of black pebbled leather material which features standard military design elements including a fold-over flap secured by dual leather straps with metal studs. The interior storage compartments of this case are designed to hold maps along with pencils and compasses and other navigation instruments which soldiers needed for battlefield operations. The back of the case bears a clear stamp indicating its production date as “1939” during the early part of the war. The manufacturer's stamp “Gebr. Dewald, Hachenburg” appears on the case to show that Gebrüder Dewald from Hachenburg Germany made this product. The early war map cases attract numerous collectors because they possess superior construction quality and hold important historical value. The map case shows minimal signs of aging while maintaining its excellent condition because all leather parts remain flexible and the stitching remains strong throughout. The map case serves as an actual artifact from WWII German military history which shows the vital equipment Wehrmacht personnel used during their early war campaigns.
