History
The WWII Japanese Army Type 94 Canteen with Harness is a significant artifact from the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Introduced in 1934 (hence the designation 'Type 94'), this canteen was standard issue for Japanese infantry soldiers and played a vital role in maintaining hydration in harsh battlefield conditions. The Type 94 canteen typically featured an aluminum or stainless-steel body, which was both lightweight and durable. It had a capacity of approximately 1 liter, sufficient for sustaining a soldier during operations. The canteen was equipped with a screw-on cap, often secured with a small chain to prevent loss. The exterior was usually coated in olive drab or brown paint for camouflage purposes.
The accompanying harness was made of canvas or webbing material and was designed to securely hold the canteen while allowing it to be attached to the soldier's belt or backpack. The harness often included adjustable straps and a snap or buckle system to ensure stability during movement.
The Type 94 canteen was a crucial component of a soldier's gear, providing water in tropical jungles, arid deserts, and freezing mountains. Soldiers were trained to ration their water carefully, especially in resource-scarce environments. The harness allowed the canteen to be carried hands-free, providing convenience during combat and long marches.
