Description
This World War II German Model 39 "Eierhandgranate" (egg hand grenade) stands as an authentic Model 39 "Eierhandgranate" that Wehrmacht forces used as their most recognizable hand grenade. The Wehrmacht adopted the Eihandgranate 39 in 1939 for offensive grenade use throughout the entire war period because of its distinctive egg-shaped design. The Model 39 grenade served exclusively for offensive operations in short-range combat situations. The grenade's compact dimensions and its lighter fragmentation charge made it suitable for trench and urban warfare since it reduced the risk of thrower injuries in enclosed spaces. The grenade had a manual throwing mechanism which produced a lethal zone spanning from 5 to 10 meters. The grenade maintains its authentic metal construction with its original wartime field-grey or dark ordnance paint finish. The grenade body maintains its traditional smooth oval shape and includes its original removable B.Z.E. (Brennzünder Eifer – "quick fuze") pull-fuze which attaches to the top. The fuze assembly has its original metal cap combined with a pull cord for triggering a 4 to 5-second detonation delay. Many Eierhandgranaten displayed manufacturer codes and production dates through stamps which appeared on the fuze well or base. The grenade remains inert for display purposes yet maintains its historical integrity to show its original German wartime ordnance features. The Model 39 Egg Grenade served German forces throughout all fronts including Eastern Front, North Africa and Western Europe as they issued it to infantry, paratroopers and assault troops. The grenade became one of Germany's primary hand grenade choices during WWII because of its compact design along with its concealed shape and dependable operation. This inert M39 grenade represents a collectible piece of German military history from WWII which is suitable for both historical displays and reenactments as well as advanced ordnance collections.
