Description
This is an original World War II-era U.S. MkII fragmentation hand grenade, commonly referred to as the "pineapple" grenade due to its iconic segmented body. This particular example is an early-war variant, distinguished by its full yellow paint, which was the standard color code for high-explosive ordnance prior to 1943. The vibrant yellow finish was later changed to an olive drab scheme for better camouflage on the battlefield, making surviving yellow-painted MkIIs increasingly rare and collectible.
The grenade features a cast iron segmented body designed to provide effective fragmentation upon detonation. These raised segments were not only functional but gave the MkII its recognizable appearance. Markings on the body are clear and well-defined, typical of wartime manufacturing standards.
It is fitted with an original M10A3 fuze, introduced in mid-war as an improvement over earlier M10 series fuzes. The M10A3 was a percussion-type fuze with a delay element, designed to function approximately 4 to 5 seconds after release of the spoon. The fuze retains its original spoon, safety pin, and pull ring assembly.
This grenade has been permanently inert—with the filler removed and the fuze deactivated—making it completely safe for display or educational purposes.
